Moving to Spain in your forties or fifties is brilliant until the perimenopause hits and suddenly you are trying to explain night sweats to a doctor whose English is roughly your Spanish. The Spanish system is not bad at women's health, it is just built on different prescribing habits, a different default attitude to HRT, and a workflow that assumes you can chat in Spanish about brand names of oestrogen gel. Most British women in Spain end up paying for private. Sanitas, which is Bupa underneath, has English speaking gynaecologists in every major city. Independent clinics like Medcare Spain and Turo Park Medical work directly off UK NICE guidelines. Standalone English speaking gynaecologists practise in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and along the Costa del Sol.
